Optical Communication

Why Optical Communication?

If we dwell over the history of communication systems, we can easily figure out that as human civilization has evolved with time, its dependence on communication systems has increased so has increased the need for more and more bandwidth.

The bandwidth is defined as a certain percentage (let's say 5%) of the center frequency of operation of any communication system. As the frequency of operation of optical communication systems (both optical fiber communication as well as free-space optical communication) is in the range of GHz - THz (Gigahertz - Terahertz) range, therefore, it can be easily demonstrated that bandwidth available in case of optical communication systems will be much higher as compared to traditional wireless communication systems (like AM, FM, Microwave links, Mobile telephony, etc.) which operate in the MHz - GHz (Megahertz - Gigahertz) range usually.
